The present study is based on th analysis 80 biopsies of the patients with pleural effusion, who were admitted to PMC. Jeonju, from January 73 to August 75.
Every case was taken of percutaneous pleural biopsy by the use of cope needle with the findings of chest X-ray, pleural effusion.
The following results were obtained.
1. The peak incidence of age was 50-50 years old in male, but female was average in all age. Male and Female ratio was 4 : 1.
2. Clinical impressions before pleura1 biopsy were tuberculous pleurisy in 53 cases, metastatic pleural carcinoma in 9 cases, acute pneumonia in 8 cases, and lung abscess, empyema due to live abscess were 3 cases each, and paragonimiasis were 2 cases.
3. Pleural biopsy by the cope needle, confirmed the pleura effusion in 73%.
4. Abnormal finding on pathologic biopsy of pleura were 88%, and tuberculosis i 44% metastatic cancer in 21%, and acute suppurative inflammation in 14%, amoebiasis in 4%, chronic nonsp ecific inflammation in 17%.
5. The idiopathic pleural effusion in the clinical tuberculous pleurisy wore 75%, and pathologic finding of idiopathic effusion in the clinical tuberculous pleurisy were tuberculosis in 51%, metastatic carcinoma in 15%, and nonspecific inflammation in 20%.
6. The metastatic cancer on pleural biopsy consisted of adenocarcinoma in 5 cases (35%), hepatoma in 3 cases, undifferentiated carcinoma in 3 cases, epideimoid carcinoma in 2 cases, and ovarian carcinoma and fibrosarcoma in 1 case.
7. The accuracy of pleural needle biopsy in idiopathic pleural effusion were 51% in tuberculous pleurisy and 60% in metastatic pleural cancer.
8. The complication of pleural biopsy were consisted of pneumothorax in 4 cases and bleeding and liemothorax in 1 case.
